Digital analysis of Van Gogh

Introduction

1.1 The Academic Yearprice

This project was presented as Maastricht's input at the Academische Jaarprijs 07/08. The Academic Yearprice (Battle of the Universities) is meant for the best translation of scientific studies towards a broad public and rewards the winner having the best proposition with 100.000,- Euro.
Maastricht managed to qualify for the final together with Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, which study was about discovering the invisible universe with the aid of infrared light. Although Groningen won the Battle of the Universities and received the check of 100.000 euro from minister Plaskerk, Maastricht University can be very proud of their achievements. The competitors of this 3rd yearprice were Universiteit Utrecht, Universiteit Leiden, Universiteit Maastricht, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, Technische Universiteit Delft, Technische Universiteit Twente, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Open Universiteit. The jury consisted of Rick van der Ploeg, Leo Halvers, Rob van Hattum, Adriana Esmeijer, Piet Borst and Marja van der Putten.

The team members of this project are:

 

1.3 Goal

The key factors of this project can be summarized as the enthusiasm for research, the multidisciplinar and international character and the web as communication medium. As context, a Van Gogh research project was choosen which started 6 years ago together as an international consortium, supported by the Van Gogh Museum, the Kröller Müller museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Since that moment, the media has been putting a lot of attention to the subject (such as New York Times, Nova Science TV and Cornell University).
